Child & Youth Care
Distance Learning Program
Prepare for a new career helping children and youth
Some young people experience distress, or family breakdown that can leave them ill-equipped to face the future. Helping young people and their families overcome emotional and behavioral problems is the child and youth care worker’s role. Now you can offer your concern, guidance, and encouragement to troubled young people and their families with the Child and Youth Care diploma.
Providing realistic practical training, the part-time program prepares the student to form healthy, guiding relationships with young people who are struggling with adversity, assisting them to use their strengths and resilience to achieve more positive direction in their life. The Bachelor of Child and Youth Care program equips graduates for a variety of careers in the human services profession: early intervention programs, community agencies, school based programs, foster care agencies, young offender facilities, family support programs and residential care settings for children and youth.
As a distance student, you will work with a tutor who is a qualified Child and Youth Care practitioner. Your tutor will grade assignments and provide you support through telephone conferencing and written correspondence. Note: You may register for up to two courses without applying to the program.

Study Options
Teleconference Courses
Detailed print based course packages are supplemented with instructor led group discussion, peer group learning activities, guest speakers and other creative approaches in a bi-weekly phone conference with other learners. Students can call into sessions from home, the workplace or local learning centers.
Web-Lite Options
In this delivery mode, an Internet course site for discussion and on-line activities replaces the teleconference.
Internet Courses (Web CT)
Basic computer skills allow participation in a highly interactive virtual classroom environment. On-line content sessions, individual and group activities, exciting visuals and innovative assignments make this a fun and flexible approach to learning. Students have full access to an instructor and log on to the course site once or twice a week. Textbooks or reading materials may be required but no print packages accompany this modality.
Tutorial Courses
Delivered on site at MacEwan South Campus, (7319-29 Avenue, Edmonton AB), tutorials usually run every other week from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. Students are provided with print-based course packages to permit independent study. Instructor facilitation and support, combined with peer group discussion and activities, make this an excellent learning option.
