Correctional Services
Earn your diploma in Correctional Services in your own community through teleconference and Internet courses.
The Correctional Services Program equips graduates to work in a variety of positions in the correctional/criminal justice field, including community agencies, correctional institutions, court related programs, and related human service careers. Graduates work with adults and youth who have come into conflict with the law or are at risk of becoming involved with the law.

Application Process:
Application for admission to the distance learning program must be made after successful completion of two Correctional Services courses.
To be accepted into the Program:
- Completion of a high school diploma (or equivalent). Mature students (at least 18 years of age and out of high school for one year) are welcome to apply.
- Submission of an autobiographical statement (outline supplied) and two letters of reference.
- Conditionally accepted applicants must submit a standard first aid certificate and a current security clearance.
- Applicants will be required to complete a Skills Appraisal exam if they do not have a minimum of English 30 at 65% OR English 33 at 75%.
- Contact the Distance Learning Coordinator, Joe Sombach (at 780-497-5179)once all admission requirements have been completed for assistance in developing an academic plan.
- Applicants who have significant education and or training in the area of corrections/criminal justice are encouraged to contact the Distance Learning Coordinator to inquire about advanced standing.
Criminal Record:
If the applicant has a criminal record, he/she must be eligible for a pardon under the Criminal Records Act.

Registration Deadlines for the courses:
- One week prior to course commencement
- All courses will run as scheduled
- There is NO minimum enrolment per course
- Fees for cancelled courses will be fully refunded
Withdrawal & Refunds of Fees:
Distance Delivery / Home study: Students will receive a 50% refund of the tuition fees provided the notice of withdrawal is received in the Registrar’s Office within 28 calendar days after the approved start date of the course. (There is no refund after this date)

Computer Requirement:
The following are minimum requirements:
- Pentium or PowerMac computer
- 28.8 modem and Internet connection
- Netscape Navigator or Internet Explorer 4.0
- 32 MB of RAM
You should also have a printer & word processing program.
If you do not have a computer you may access one at YREC or your local library.
