Job Opportunities for Building Success is a 10-month employment program that connects students to the right jobs through classroom instruction and community-based, on-the-job training. Develop the skills and attitudes required in today's workplace and get a job with a future. 

Program Goals

  • Attach future economic independence
  • Receive training opportunities that are suited to your education, health and aptitude
  • Gain experience with equipment and current workplace practices
  • Receive current work references

Admission Prerequisites

  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Interview for program suitability

  • January 5, 2009 to October 31, 2009

Financial Aid, Bursaries & Awards

Students demonstrating financial need may be eligible for bursaries, grants or loans. Please refer to the NorQuest College Calendar for information on how to apply.

Classroom Instruction (12 weeks)

Full-time studies include:

  • Job safety skills
  • Interpersonal/intercultural skills
  • English
  • Math
  • Computer literacy
  • Employment preparation
  • WHMIS/First Aid training 

Work Experience (28 weeks)

With on-the-job training, students gain the skills needed to be a success in the workplace. Depending on their career goals, students also have the opportunity to earn special certification in areas such as forklift training, H2S, and food safety. Students receive ongoing, intensive support and mentoring by college staff during the on-the-job training period.

Employment Opportunities

Students have been employed in areas such as food services, care facilities, clerical, retail, warehousing, automotive, production, customer service and more.  

PROGRAM OF STUDIES

Consumer and Applied Mathematics
MATH 1908

Develop your ability to accurately manipulate numbers to solve everyday problems related to money management, consumerism, and budgeting. Make calculations using SI/metric measures as well as percentage calculations. Learn the importance of making planned consumer decisions and verifying the accuracy of financial documents. 

Computer Literacy
COMP 1001

Receive an introduction to word processing operations, Internet research, and email. Improve your keyboarding, grammar, and document formatting skills.

Communication Skills
COMM 1000

Develop behaviours and attitudes that enhance your employability. Improve your coping strategies and understand your social roles and responsibilities. 

Job Skills
JOBS 1001

Students may earn special certification according to their career objectives (ie TDG, H2S, Driver's Exam etc.). Students discuss these options on an ongoing basis with their instructor. All students have the opportunity to earn their First Aide and WHIMIS certification.

Explore strategies to maximize your employability. Focus on the skills and personal attributes that employers need and expect from their staff. 

Job Safety Skills

Gain basic skills and knowledge in workplace safety and personal safety. These skills fit many occupations.

Develop functional reading, writing, and communication skills for the workplace. 

Work Experience I and II
WORK 1201 and WORK 1202

Receive up to 28 weeks (7 months) of NorQuest monitored on-the-job-training in a work site selected to provide high-quality training and employment potential.
