Some companies provide in-house training opportunities to help gas plant operators advance to more senior positions. First aid and safety training may also be required, especially in sour gas plants.

The Oil and Gas Production Operator (OGPO) program provides personalized learning modules that are focused on individual achievement and academic success. The goal of the OGPO program is to train professional and technically knowledgeable individuals for the oil and gas industry. Oil and Gas Production Operators are increasing becoming required by the oil and gas industry, and are considered essential personnel to keep the industry running.

The program consists of four levels that progress in content and scope.
